Homes under the Hammer is one of the
most successful show that is, shown on the BBC its normal run time is from
10.00- 10.30 (11.00 depending on how many homes are, shown).
The show lasts 30 minuets to and hour
depending on how many homes are, shown in the program, the program follows the
guidelines above throughout all the episodes. The presenters choose which
houses that are on the show by looking at the houses listed in the auction list
for a nearby auction. During the show the houses are, refurbished and possibly
sold on to others for more, then triple the original amount that they were
bought for from auction, in the episode that I will be analyzing there is a
house in Cardiff which has a massive amount of damp that is on the walls and
ceilings, the roof above the kitchen a huge hole the house is on the market for
£150,000. The second building is a large house which has been, turned into offices,
needed is a renovation license to change it from an office building into a home
the presenters think that the house can become five flats which will increase
the amount of money the buyer will gain but the home was on the market for
£350,000. Also a flat, which has been almost ripped apart from the walls
because of excessive damp it, was on the market for £30,000.
The main focus for the buyer is to buy a
building at auction cheaply then fix the house up by changing the flooring and
the walls by changing anything from cracked floorboards to damp seeping through
the walls, the hosts walk through the houses before they are, bought and they
point out to the camera what they think needs to, be improved then they talk
with the buyer and ask how they will improve the house themselves, then they
come back to the house when the work is all finished bringing estate agents to
see how much the estate agents recommend for the house to, be sold for.
Camerawork:
The camerawork for homes under the
hammer is simple the camera tracks the presenters along with doing pans across
room in the houses then need they show different types of fades to show the
changes made to the different rooms. The
many different angels and types of shots that are used in the shows are there to
stop the audience from ben bored when they change to a different view. The
fades that are used in both rooms are changed for each room in the episode I
watched of Homes under the Hammer I saw about 5 different fades where were
spirals, boxes, spins and normal fades. The shots when the fade is applied is
the same view just the surroundings change then the camera moves around the
room to show how the whole room has changed.
Music:
The Music that is, used is to mainly
amplify the voices of the presenters I have found that when I am listening to
some music playing n the background I can hear someone talking in the
foreground louder than normal because the background music is amplifying the
foreground sound. The genres of music are quite different they can vary from
acoustic rock to pop.
Language:
The language in Homes under the Hammer
is formal because of the genre of the show it is a factual program using
informal language would attract a different target audience, the target
audience for Homes under the Hammer I would say are people from the ages 38-52
the reason I think this is because of the fact that they are the most likely to
buy a home at an auction because it is cheep if they used an informal language
then they would be targeting a younger audience who would have no need for the
show.
Include audience:
The audience is included in the show
because the presenters are giving out tips fro the audience during the film
with what they would do if they were meant to fix up the house trying to give
the most effective way instead of the cheapest also at the end of the show the
presenters are talking at the camera as if they are talking to the audience.
Editing:
The editing for Homes under the Hammer
is used to show how the houses have changed from when they were still on the
market by showing different fades to the outside of the house the inside back
yard showing the damp covered wall as it fades into the new house with the
problems from the start of the program fixed ready for the new estimate from
the estate agents.
Conventions of a T.V. show:
The conventions of when the presenters
are talking to the buyers as in a normal T.V. show the camera switches between
them back and forth every time they start and stop talking this also includes
over the shoulder shots and two shots. Another convention is that they both
talk to the camera at the audience they both give a voice over to the houses
which is normal for a T.V. show like this it’s the same with Cash in the Attic
and Location Location Location. The
other conventions are the title sequence giving a short view about what the
show is about by showing money and houses showing that this show involves
houses and making money also is the end sequence it shows the same shots from
the program of the rooms with the fade to the rooms when they are finished
along with that there are extra close ups to parts of the room which held a significance
during the episode.
